Without the existence of mantras, Sanatana Dharma would lose it's philosophy because every important scripture is written in verses (mostly these are the Mantras).

Some of the MOST IMPORTANT MANTRAS of Sanatana Dharma.

AUM
ॐ 

Aum, this 'one letter mantra' is the most important mantra of Sanatana Dharma.

GAYATRI MANTRA
गायत्री मंत्र
‘OM’
Bhuur-bhuvah Swaha-Tatsa-Vitur Varennyamm,
Bhargo-Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo-Yonah-Prachodayaat

Translation:
Aum! O Supreme Creator, You are the provider of life,
remover of pain and sorrow and the bestower of happiness;
O Creator of the Universe, may we receive Thy supreme sin-destroying light;
may You channel our intellect to the right path.


The Gayatri mantra is one of the most venerated mantra in Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism). It finds mention in every Veda but comes from the Rig Veda,, first and most revered of the four Vedas. It also finds its esteem and relevance in other important scriptures like the 'MahaBharat' and 'Srimad Bhagvatam', The Bhagvad Gita and the 'Ramayana'.


Importance: This mantra is most common mantra recited to achieve purity and piety in life. It helps to calm thoughts and brings peace to our minds. Many people chant this mantra 108 times each day. It is also used at each and every auspicious occasion.
The Gayatri Mantra is also chanted daily by many to achieve higher level of Intellect, wisdom, knowledge and to achieve greater spirituality, calmness and divine consciousness. People who chant this mantra certainly feel peace and contentment.

ॐ श्री गणेशाय नमः
Aum Shri Ganeshay namah:

ॐ गनगणपतये नमः 
Aum Gan-Ganpataye namah:



These mantras symbolize auspiciousness, and devoted to Lord Ganesha, the venerated son of God Shiva. Before every puja or ceremony (religious or social), any situation (auspicious or inauspicious), God Ganesha's mantra is chanted. The above two mantras (either one is chosen) are used for chanting at such occasions.

Both Mantras are also used by many individuals and businessmen to begin their daily work. These mantras are also commonly found at the top of many invoices, greeting and invitation cards, among Hindus.

God Shiva
ॐ नमः शिवाय।
Aum Namah Shivay


This Shiva mantra is most widely chanted after AUM. Along with the Gayatri mantra this is one of the two most important mantras for chanting, especially by the devotees of God Shiva.

This mantra also has an extended 'stotra'-chant, which is more commonly famous as the 'Panch-aakshar-Stotram' पञ्चाक्षर स्तोत्रं, meaning a chant of five syllables: 'NA, MAH, SHI, VA  & YA'!

मंदाकिनी-सलिल-चंदन-चर्चिताय नंदीश्व प्रमथनाथ-महेश्वराय l मंदार-पुष्य-बहुपुष्य–सुपूजिताय तस्मै “म” काराय नम: शिवाय ॥


शिवाय गौरीवदनाब्जवृन्द-सूर्याय दक्षाध्वर-नाशकाय l श्रीनीलकंठाय वृषध्वजाय तस्मै “शि” काराय नम: शिवाय ॥



वसिष्ठ-कुम्भोद्भव गौतमार्य-मुनीन्द्र-देवार्चित-शेखराय l चंद्रार्क-वैश्वानर-लोचनाय तस्मै “व” काराय नम: शिवाय ॥


यज्ञस्वरुपाय जटाधराय पिनाक-हस्ताय सनातनाय l दिव्याय देवाय दिगम्बराय तस्मै “य” काराय नम: शिवाय ॥

Maha-Mrityunjaya Mantra
महामृत्युंजय मंत्र





Aum tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭi-vardhanam

urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt



Maha-Mrityunjaya Mantra is chanted to Shiva, and believed to have the power to ward off untimely death. This mantra is also called 'Rudra-mantra', Mitra-Sanjivani Mantra' and 'Trayambakam mantra'.  It is considered to be one of the most potent mantras ever recited.

While its energy protects and guides the initiates, a mantra re-links consciousness to its deeper and more abiding nature and repetition of the mantra constitutes Japa, which develops concentration that leads to transformation of awareness. While the Gayatri Mantra is for purification and spiritual consciousness, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is meant for healing rejuvenation and protection.

God Krishna
भगवान  श्री कृष्ण
 
This Mantra was first chanted by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (the great devotee of Lord Krishna). Many believe him to be an incarnation (avatar) of God Krishna. This mantra is chanted many many people, especially by the followers of Krishna (more so by the devotees of the ISKCON - International Society for Krishna Consciousness)

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सुर्यकोटि समप्रभ

Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryessu Sarvadaa


Meaning:
O Lord Ganesha, of Curved TrunkLarge Body, with Brilliance of ten million Suns
Please Make All my Works Free of Obstacles, Always.



IMPORTANCE: This is a very auspicious mantra addressed to God Ganesha. It is considered so auspicious that no invitation card for any auspicious occasion is printed without this mantra. This Mantra helps in removing all obstacles or hindrances and presents good luck and fortune.

8:

GURU MANTRA
गुरु मंत्र

Maha-Rishi Ved Vyas
(Guru among Rishis)

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुर्गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः ।
गुरुरेव परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥१॥
Gurur-Brahmaa Gurur-Vishnu-Gururdevo Maheshvarah |
Gurureiva Param Brahma Tasmai Shri-Gurave Namah ||1||


Meaning:
The Guru is Brahma, the Guru is Vishnu, the Guru Deva is Maheswara (Shiva),
The Guru is Verily the Para-Brahman (Supreme Brahman); Salutations to that Guru.



This mantra is considered important because it praises the Guru who is knowledgeable. Without His knowledge we would have gained no knowledge. In that respect He is of great knowledge and has the knowledge of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

SURYA NAMASKAR
सूर्य नमस्कार


॥ ॐ ध्येयः सदा सवित्र मण्डल मध्यवर्ती नारायण सरसिजा सनसन्नि विष्टः
केयूरवान मकरकुण्डलवान किरीटी हारी हिरण्मय वपुर धृतशंख चक्रः ॥
ॐ मित्राय नमः। ॐ रवये नमः। ॐ सूर्याय नमः। ॐ भानवे नमः।
ॐ खगाय नमः।  ॐ पुषणे नमः। ॐ हिरण्यगर्भाय नमः। ॐ मरीचये नमः।
ॐ आदित्याय नमः। ॐ सवित्रे नमः। ॐ अर्काय नमः। ॐ भास्कराय नमः।
ॐ श्रीसवित्रसूर्यनारायणाय नमः।
॥ आदित्यस्य नमस्कारन् ये कुर्वन्ति दिने दिने
आयुः प्रज्ञा बलम् वीर्यम् तेजस्तेशान् च जायते ॥
|| om dhyeyaḥ sadā savitra maṇḍala madhyavartī nārāyaṇa sarasijā sanasanni viṣṭaḥ
keyūravāna makarakuṇḍalavāna kirīṭī hārī hiraṇmaya vapura dhṛtaśaṁkha cakraḥ ||
om mitrāya namaḥ | om ravaye namaḥ | om sūryāya namaḥ |
om bhānave namaḥ | om khagāya namaḥ | om puṣaṇe namaḥ |
om hiraṇyagarbhāya namaḥ | om marīcaye namaḥ | om ādityāya namaḥ |
om savitre namaḥ | om arkāya namaḥ | om bhāskarāya namaḥ |
om śrīsavitrasūryanārāyaṇāya namaḥ |
|| ādityasya namaskāran ye kurvanti dine dine
āyuḥ prajñā balam vīryam tejasteśān ca jāyate ||

'Surya (Sun) Namaskar(-Salutations)' is widely practiced as a yogic exercise and this mantra is simultaneously recited or chanted in praise of Sun God. It has numerous benefits. As one of the best yogic exercises, this sequence of exercises (see illustration above) includes vitally important exercise of 'pranayam', probably the most important yogic exercise for concentration, mental peace, calmness, enlightenment and mental & physical harmony. As a routine, those who chant and perform the 'Surya Namaskar', the reciters wake at crack of dawn, cleanse themselves and then perform the 'Namaskar'. By doing so one is mentally peaceful and calm, has pure thoughts and thus his activities throughout the day are righteous and pious. This also helps in keeping one'self physically fit and active.
Surya Namaskar is performed by millions of people each morning. This can be witnessed mainly at the banks of the river or near other water bodies.

Shani Mula Mantra
शनि मूल मंत्र 




ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः
"Om Sham Shanaiscaryaye Namah."

One can chant these mantra's minimum 7 times a day. But chanting 108 times is more ideal for those troubled by Shani.

ॐ नमो भगवते वसुदेवायः
Aum Namo Bhagvate Vasudevayah

Translation: I surrender (with salutations) to the Supreme God Krishna.

This mantra is very commonly used in praise of God Vishnu - (and His incarnation - Krishna). This mantra was originally advised by Sage Narada to a five-year-old child (Balak) Dhruva for penance (tapasya). Dhruv's devotion elevated him to be one of the Sapt-Rishis (The Seven Rishis - The seven Seers). This mantra was prominently used by Swami Vivekanand, owing to which it is as popular as it is today.

Lakshmi Devi Slokas
(Goddess, Mother Lakshmi)
ॐ ऐम श्रीम ह्रीम श्रीम कमले कमालाय प्रसीध प्रसीध।
श्रीम ह्रीम श्रीम ॐ महालाक्ष्मिये नमहे।।
Om Aim Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamlai kamalayaya preseetha preseetha
Shrim Hreem Shee Om Mahalakshmiayai Namahae.

Then chant the following 9 names of Mahalakshmi:
ॐ महालक्ष्मी नमहे, ॐ गजलक्ष्मी नमः
ॐ जयलक्ष्मी नमः ॐ थनलक्ष्मी नमः
ॐ सन्तन लक्ष्मी नमः ॐ सीथा लक्ष्मी नमः
ॐ थैरेय लक्ष्मी नमः ॐ थन्न्य लक्ष्मी नमः
ॐ विद्या लक्ष्मी नमः ॐ महाविशु महालक्ष्मी नमहे।

Om Mahalakshmi Namahae, Om GajaLakshmi Namah!,
Om Jay lakshmi Namahae, Om ThanLakshmi Namah!
Om Santan lakshmi Namah, Om Seetha-Lakshmi Namah!
Om Thairaya-Lakshmi Namah, Om Thannya-Lakshmi Namah!
Om VIdya-Lakshmi Namah, Om Maha-Vishnu Maha-Lakshmi Namah!


Goddess Maha-Lakshmi is the console of God Vishnu, and one of the three Supreme Goddesses of Sanatana Dharma along with Maha-Saraswati and Maha-Kali. Maha-Lakshmi is prayed to, for wealth, prosperity, beauty, devotion and happiness in life. This matra ends with -

सर्व मंगल मंगलेय शिव।
सर्वथा सथेक, सरेनीय थ्रिययम्बगे गौरी नारायणी नमशोथ।
ॐ सौभागीय वरलक्श्मिय मबिगहे नमहे।।
sarva managala mangalyea siva, sarvatha satheka, 
sareneeya thriyeyambagae gauri narayannee namashotha. 
Om Saubhagiya Varalakshmiya Ambigahae Namahae. 

ॐ महदेवियाए  सगल सौभागियम  धेहिमे  साथ।।
Om Maha Deviyai Sagala Saubagiyam dhehimei satha!

ॐ कराग्रे वस्ते लक्ष्मी करमूले सरवती। ॐ 
ॐ करमधे तू गोविन्द प्रभाते करदर्शनम ॐ ।।
Translation: 
On the upper portion of the palms dwells Maha-Lakshmi;
At the center of palms, dwells Maha-Saraswati;
At the joints dwells Govind (Krishna);
Take a Darshan (pious look) at dawn!

This mantra is chanted when people wake up, and the first thing they do is, bring their palms close to their eyes, look at the palms and chant.
